that footwear exports in the first 11 months of the year reached $5.7 billion
and are expected to total $6.2 billion for the whole of 2011. The association
forecasts continued growth in 2012, but at a slower rate than in 2011.

ARGENTINA

report on the footwear
industry in Argentina shows
that between January and
November 2011, the value
of shoe imports into the
country increased by 38.9%
compared with the first
eleven months of 2010. The
value for 2011 was $468.4
million, compared with
$337.1 million for the same
period the previous year.
Argentina has a series of
import control measures in
place to help preserve jobs
in its domestic footwear
industry. The authors of the
report, consultancy IES, say
that these measures appear
to have affected major
exporters in Asia far less
than they have producers in
neighbouring Brazil.
UNITED STATES
Brown Shoe Company has reported a slight fall (0.3%) in its
sales revenue for the third quarter compared with the same period in 2010. Across
the group, sales of footwear brought in $713.8 million for the quarter in 2011. “We
recently completed the first phase of our previously announced portfolio review and
have made determinations about some of our assets,” said Diane Sullivan,
president and chief executive officer of the company. “As a result, we will be exiting
several businesses, including all of children’s wholesale and some women’s
specialty and private brands. In addition, we have accelerated our real estate
review and now plan to close between 70 and 75 Famous Footwear stores in fiscal
2011 and 2012, for a total of approximately 145 stores.”
