DESIGNER URGES WEARERS TO BE GENTLE

A footwear designer based in France has announced the launch of his first men’s handmade footwear collection. Elliot Wo originally f

collection, which consists of his interpretation of the men’s moccasin, has had a “20-year incubation period”. However, he has said he will be adding a further ten styles to the first, called the Blake (in keeping with the poets theme in the designer’s own name), between now and October. The whole collection will go on sale at his own online shop, which he intends to open in September.

“I’ve selected beautiful hand crafted upper leathers from Tuscany (there will be four colours available) and a robust but beautiful cow lining from a tannery in France,” Mr

Wordsworth said on announcing the collection. “In the design, conception, construction and making, I’ve strived for the highest quality in order to provide customers with an elegant, hugely comfortable moccasin which, if treated with care, will last for many years.” He explained that treating the shoes with care means, principally, that wearers must break them in gently. He said: “As a shoe

professional and artisan, here are my care suggestions. To begin with, customers should wear the shoes only at home. Not only will this give the leathers time to conform to your foot shape, it will also ensure that the fibres in the outsole are compressed by your body weight, which in effect closes the leather structure. I suggest one-to-two hours, two-to-three times per week for the first month. Then, I suggest wearing them no more than three times per week and never for two days in a row.”

GROWTH LEADS TO SALES-TEAM EXPANSION FOR CHATHAM MARINE

Specialist sailing footwear and apparel brand Chatham Marine has expanded its sales team covering the south of England, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. The expanded sales team will begin immediately to distribute Chatham’s summer 2012 footwear collection and its G2 and Sport clothing ranges to retailers in these European countries. With year-on-year growth running at more than 40%, the sports brand has said it expects this expansion to boost its European business by 30%, with 45% growth in the UK.

Managing director, Philip Marsh, said on announcing the move: “Our investment in clothing and new seasonal collections for 2012 is a great opportunity to get into the wider marketplace. With a strong product portfolio, an increase in high-street based stockists, and now a new sales team for Europe, we’re confident we can achieve even stronger growth for the brand next year.”
